Camino Portuguese 2023
Today is a big day for us, last walking day on the Camino.
Awake on the dot of 6 am to get organised and on our way. Apart from finishing in Santiago it’s also about a 25/26km day on very weary feet.
It was a lovely start though little villages and windy roads.
Not long after our first coffee, it started getting pretty busy with pilgrims again.
A pilgrim highway, if you will….
Made it milladoira about lunchtime and this little town is about 7k from Santiago so we ate and rehydrated ready for the next and final walk.
Met some jolly poms with a couple of km’s to go and they certainly helped us get it done.
We were sore and hot and bothered and the cathedral seems so far away but the suddenly there it was.
The square in front of the cathedral is packed with pilgrims arriving and the raw emotion that they are feeling is evident.
Neither of us are having the same feeling as we did when we finished the French Camino, today I feel only relief that the walking is over. Is it the distance, time, comigos….?
It was so different from the French but I will try and and reflect on this in the coming weeks.
We took the obligatory photos in front of the cathedral. It truly is a magnificent building.
We then took our weary selves around to the pilgrims office to receive our compestala.
( the certificate that states we have done what we have done)
Next stop was finding our accommodation, still in the old city but a touch out of the tourist area.
Afternoon spent with showers, washing and resting with feet up until it was time for beers and dinner.
Hopefully add a post on images of this Camino and a reflections post later. Buen Camino.
You can catch up on our next adventure when we attempt to conquer Hadrian's wall in a couple of weeks time
